How to work with a difficult and overbearing colleague?

Whenever you encounter a difficult situation or person in your life, remember they are life’s attempt at trying to teach you something. Sometimes when we get too complacent, life sends us an incident or a person who completely shakes us up and forces us to acknowledge the need for change.

To give you an example, one of my very first mathematics teachers in school was a very strict and fastidious gentleman. He seemed to find fault with everything that I did or said. At first I spent a considerable amount of time being angry and hurt with his behaviour. But gradually I started looking beyond his conduct, to what he was trying to point out.

Today I credit him for single-handedly teaching me the significance of paying close attention to detail. Thanks to him, my work is sharper, clearer and less prone to errors.

So my suggestion to you would be to cast off the outer negative packaging and look for the gift of learning hidden within. Maybe his overbearing attitude is an indication for you to learn to be more assertive and confident about your work or gain some new insights into human behavior. Whatever the learning, I guarantee you it will be worth it.

To summarize:

  1. Separate the outer emotional packaging from the learning within.
  2. Everyday consciously focus on making the changes you think are indicated.
  3. Name three blessings/things that are good about this individual and how you can build on that in the present moment?
