Life is short!

Portrait of a boy standing in front of a camel

All it takes is one sudden moment and your whole life can become topsy-turvy. My aunt passed away exactly one year ago while having a cup of tea with my uncle (her husband). This also came after a day with family where she showed no signs of ill-health.

We have heard of the proverb, “There is many a slip between the cup and the lip.” This came literally true as my aunt could not finish her cup of tea! However, on the bright side, the greatest of her achievements was how she had spent her life serving the community. In her own right, she became the ultimate support for my uncle in his amazing service.

At the end of the day, we don’t take what we have, but what we gave. She gave a lot, especially of herself!

The Sufis say that you can plan for a hundred years, but you do not know what will happen the next second. You do not want to postpone your spiritual life as we do not know when we will be called back to our origin. On the other hand, we want to plan for a worldly life long enough that if we do in fact live longer, we are prepared for that too.

Every day ask yourself – if this is the only day I am going to live, what kind of day will I have? Or if today was the only day that counts for my success in all walks of life including my spiritual journey, how is my day going to be?

You can procrastinate many unimportant things, but not forgiveness, gratitude, service, kindness, and love!
