Service is an opportunity, not an obligation

Service is one of the most potent forces in the universe. The more you serve, the more you generate, create and innovate. The more you serve, the more you can tap into your genius and potential. When you embrace this principle, you invite abundance into your life. The opportunity to serve is a blessing, not a burden.

Instead of thinking about the time or money you may give up while serving, think instead of what you could gain from this gracious act. When you serve by giving money or resources, you are contributing to the forces of good karma. When you serve by giving your time, you are boosting your leadership and interpersonal skills. Any cause you freely dedicate your time and effort to is a great indication of your passion for positive change and progress.

And the skills you learn in voluntary work, like time management, patience, and tenacity, are hard to learn elsewhere. When leading other volunteers, you are not motivating a team with the promise of money but by inspiring them with a cause, a purpose. This requires a different—and more powerful—skill set. It offers a chance to tap into your potential, to discover work that you are passionate about and an opportunity to build intangible leadership skills.

Most importantly, it is proof that you are someone who truly cares about contributing to the greater good, not because it is a mandated task or obligation but because you truly have a desire to help.

Therefore, treat every receiver with utmost respect, dignity and reverence. Take the approach that the Scottish philosopher William Barclay shares, “Give without remembering and receive without forgetting.” Or, as Mother Teresa would say, “Do not forget to thank the people who allow you to serve them.”
