How to Overcome Hidden Hurdles that Derail Your Goals

Picture yourself walking into a crowded room—if you know exactly what you’re looking for, you’ll spot it in no time. But if you’re just wandering around without a clear idea, you’re likely to get lost in the chaos.

The foundation of any success lies in clarity. As my co-author, Brian Tracy, wisely says: “An average person with crystal-clear goals will run circles around a genius with no goals.” When you know exactly what you want, why you want it, and what success looks like, your goals become a guiding compass to a meaningful life.

Defining goals isn’t the whole story. How many times have we set ambitious targets, only to lose momentum midway? Or worse, avoided taking that first step altogether? We get stuck, distracted, or overwhelmed, letting excuses stand in our way.

When we reflect on barriers you will realize it is not only about external challenges, but also about challenges that come from within. For example, your mindset, habits, and the excuses you give yourself.

Here are 10 of the biggest hurdles often faced with an eye on toward overcoming them.

1. Procrastination

  • Challenge: Do you delay important tasks?
  • Solution:
    • Understand the real cause: Ask yourself, “What is the root cause not just the symptom?” Overcoming the root cause is a long term solution.
    • Begin Rule: Start with something small, like opening a document or writing one sentence. This simple action often sparks momentum.

2. Fear of Failure

  • Challenge: Does fear of making mistakes or being judged stop you from taking action?
  • Solution:
    • Reflect on your purpose. When your purpose becomes larger than you, your fear is forced to take a step back.
    • Instead of fearing failure, see it as an opportunity to learn and grow.

3. Perfectionism

  • Challenge: Is your waiting for the “perfect” moment or idea paralyzing any action at all?
  • Solution:
    • Don’t seek perfection instead strive for excellence
    • Taking imperfect action is better than not acting at all.

4. Overplanning

  • Challenge: Do you always spend too much time planning instead of executing?
  • Solution:
    • Planning is important, however once you have a plan, execution is the name of the game.

5. Large Goals Feel Overwhelming

  • Challenge: Do you feel paralyzed by the size of your goal?
  • Solution:
    • Focus on the next action. For example, instead of trying to write an entire report, start with creating a title.
    • Celebrate small wins to maintain momentum.

6. Lack of Motivation

  • Challenge: Do you struggle to stay motivated over time?
    • Knowing your actions contribute to something greater can inspire sustained effort.
    • Track your progress using journals, habit trackers, or apps. Seeing how far you’ve come can reignite your drive.

7. Lack of Consistent Action

  • Challenge: Do you tend to start many projects but never seem to finish any?
  • Solution
  • Focus on completing the task 100 % when you have momentum rather taking another task.

8. Boredom or Distraction

  • Challenge: Do you find yourself postponing the important tasks in favour of more enjoyable distractions like social media?
  • Solution:
    • Create a distraction-free environment by putting your phone out of sight.
    • Use your boredom as a launching pad. Set aside time where your only options are to work on the task or do nothing at all (no sleeping, reading, scrolling social media or talking to someone). Boredom will often push you into action.

9. Decision Fatigue

  • Challenge: Is your decision fatigue draining you?
  • Solution:
    • Plan your day the night before. Identify the top three priorities and calendarize times for completing them ideally first thing in the morning.

10. Avoidance of Difficult Tasks

  • Challenge: Do you tend to avoid or put off tasks that feel challenging or uncomfortable?
  • Solution:
    • Use reward bundling by pairing a task with something you enjoy, such as sipping your favourite coffee while tackling a report or listening to your favourite music while working out.

Remember, achieving your goals isn’t just about reaching the destination—it’s about creating a purpose-driven, fulfilling journey along the way.

Incorporating even small changes and ideas in your daily working style can help you achieve big results over time. What’s the one action you’ll take today?
