I was reading today that Carlos Slim, the telecommunications magnate who controls Mexico’s America Movil SAB, maintained his title as the richest person on Earth for 2012. The 72 year-old’s net worth rose $13.4 billion (or 21.6 per cent) through to December 31. All the world’s top moguls got even richer in 2012. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, they added $241 billion to their collective net worth, for a total of $1.9 trillion.
Yes, these are big deals! But so is a hug from a mother; a smile from a child; experiencing the joy of an unselfish act; or even something as simple as seeing the stars in the sky! These are also big deals! Not everyone can be a mega billionaire. However, almost all of us can partake in and witness a hug from a mother, a smile from a child, experience the joy of an unselfish act and see the stars.
A big deal for many is a huge business deal, some major PR opportunity or winning the lottery. Yes, these are good. However as they are external gratifications, they are never enough.
Led by the example of Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, it is great to see the rich becoming richer, not by adding more zeros to their net worth but by giving more!
The Corporate Sufi philosophy is to earn more so you can give more.
