From a Different Lens

When you visit a home for old people like I used to do (to visit my Dad), you get a different perspective of life.

In the last little while, I met an old man who was hiding some food in his drawer because he found the food at the home for old people too bland. The food he was hiding was not exactly healthy food, however, he reckoned I am old and on my way to death so why not enjoy the food I like
– what do I have to live for anyway?

What would be a right approach or wrong approach becomes blurry when you put yourself in their shoes. You start looking at life through a different lens!

Outside one relatively younger lady (66 years old) suffering from cancer was a poem of a 90-year-old man who never missed breakfast with his wife even though the wife no longer recognized who he was. His attitude was “she does not recognize me but I recognize her!” The 66-year-old lady’s husband by the way never missed a meal with her!

Visiting the old people home is sometimes confusing, sometimes inspiring and most of the time provides a paradigm shift.

My father passed away peacefully on Oct 21 so will not be visiting the home as much, however, lots of lessons learned to hopefully last me a lifetime. Thanks, Dad!
