Work on the Business!

While there are many obvious perks to being your own boss, the challenges can also be equally baffling.

Instead of one boss, you now have multiple clients to report to; schedules to adhere to, and responsibilities to handle.

With freelancing on the rise, the need for self-learning, instruction, and discipline are critical to creating both a successful and profitable enterprise, as well as achieving personal success.

Here are a few tips to help you work in the business:

1. Set your goals and read them every day

Find out what inspires you; moves you; makes you passionate enough to give it your all. That is your life’s purpose. And ideally, the work or profession you choose should be driven by this purpose. Once you are clear about your purpose, you should set your life and work goals around this purpose.

2. Planning

Commit your most important tasks or work to those zones, and although you may sometimes feel like it – do not deviate. This will help you structure your workday and enhance self-discipline in order to generate maximum productivity.

3. Set your work hours limit

Decide on your daily number of work hours and shut down your activity when the required hours are done. This will force you to be mindful and productive during the designated hours.

4. Keep your skills updated

Find out what new skills are most relevant and aligned with your work portfolio and upgrade whenever required.

5. Venture out of your comfort zone

Unless you stick your head out into an undiscovered area, you will not be able to expand your capability zone.

6. Stay healthy and active

Exercise is vital to maintaining a healthy and active mind and in effect a purposeful stance in the way you approach life and work.

7. Be open to feedback

View it as information and insight that you can use objectively to work on your shortcomings and honing your skills.

Bottom line – work on the business, not in the business!
