Three Questions. Five Minutes. Lasting Peace.

Ever leave the office, only to find the office doesn’t leave you? Do you hear the noise of work follow you into the rest of your life? Family dinners, conversations with friends, even quiet personal time aimed at rejuvenating you?

This inability to disengage has lasting consequences—affecting sleep, relationships, your physical performance, and mental presence.

As I tackled many of my own mistakes over the years, I learned that peace doesn’t appear by accident but through application.

Adopting the Corporate Sufi: Business, Balance and Beyond (BBB) framework is a simple and effective pathway to finding that peace.

At the end of each workday, pause for five minutes and ask yourself these three questions:

1. What Meaningful Value Did I Create Today?

The Business dimension of the Corporate Sufi philosophy is centered on creating meaningful value for all the stakeholders you serve.

This question changes the measure from activity to impact.

Write down one way in which your work created value. Remember, not every valuable contribution appears immediately on a dashboard.

Rather than self-congratulation, make it an honest assessment. Focus on how you restored someone’s confidence, improved a process, or asked questions that led to better decisions that will bring results long after the day has ended.

Resist ending your workday focused on what remains unfinished (“What is incomplete?”), but rather on meaningful progress made (“What is better because of my contribution?”).

2. What Aspect of My Work/Life Needs Balance?

The Balance dimension of the Corporate Sufi philosophy is dedicated to discerning what deserves your energy—and what no longer does.

Ask yourself: What must I take on—and what can I release?

If you are able to act on something now, take one constructive step toward it.

If not, either schedule it for an appropriate time or consciously set it down.

Releasing does not mean avoiding responsibility. It means refusing to let responsibility consume the rest of your life.

Your time, energy, and presence should not be viewed as abundant but as immensely valuable resources.

Balance is knowing what resources to employ and when. So assess each with the intention of transcending the demands of the workplace alone.

3. What Deserves My Purposeful Attention Next?

The Beyond dimension invites us to look past urgency and ask a deeper question:

What matters most and deserves my time because it serves a larger purpose?

Before ending the day, identify the one action for tomorrow that will create not only progress, but meaningful impact—advancing an important project, strengthening a relationship, mentoring a colleague, or aligning your work with your values.

Purpose gives your work meaning:

  • Write the task down, along with the first required action.
  • Focus on the difference that task can make.
  • Give the task a specific place and time.

With this, your tomorrow will always be prepped with intention and direction, so you can transition peacefully from work commitments to life accomplishments.

Build Your Ritual

Your daily commitment to addressing the three BBB questions will be a huge step toward making your leadership journey more tranquil.

Step 1: Answer the questions, take three slow breaths, and say, “The day is complete.”

Step 2: Accept that some tasks will remain unfinished; some problems will remain unresolved. That’s the nature of meaningful work—you do not have to solve tomorrow’s problems tonight.

Step 3: End with gratitude for what you contributed, compassion for what did not go perfectly, and clarity for what comes next.

Then, return to your life beyond work.

Success is not only about how purposefully you begin each day, but also about how peacefully you end it.
