Being Early

If you want a smooth sailing whether in driving to work or to your dentist, taking a flight and attending a seminar is to start early.

By planning the night before what you need to take with you, the clothes you want to wear, thinking about the potential traffic at the time of your travel would greatly enhance your journey. You will be relaxed and actually enjoy the ride.

It is a myth to think that by squeezing every minute and starting late you are saving time. Actually, you are saving time by starting early because you will be better prepared for the meeting and save time avoiding the traffic.

Starting early is the mark of successful people.

Meditation & Work

Meditation at work seems like an anomaly. But the busier we are the more there is the need to be meditative. Companies the world over are now recognizing its effect on employee well-being and productivity. For instance, Google, Twitter and Facebook regularly hold in-office meditation sessions to enhance mindfulness.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that meditation can revamp brain circuitry and change the way we perceive stress and deal with it. People who regularly meditate have better focus, are more creative, are less prone to anxiety and have a heightened sense of self-awareness. Plus, meditation is also known to slow down the aging process and enhance immune function.

One paper cited by Google even implies that meditators are more resistant to the flu.
Other than incorporating meditation as part of your daily routine, there are several mind-body techniques which you can practice during your work hours to center yourself in the midst of a busy day. This will help you feel calmer and more empowered to deal with any situation.

So select one or all of the following depending on what suits you best.

➢ Root yourself – Imagine yourself as a giant oak tree, with your torso embodying the trunk and your feet the roots.

➢ Create your own special mantra of life affirmations. Maybe it’s your favorite prayer or mantra or even a compliment given by someone. Use the phrase that you feel instantly connected to and uplifted by. Repeat it at least 5-6 times every day.

➢ Take a Zen walk – Anything done with conscious awareness can become a meditation. Walking is one of the simplest ways to center yourself, and the best part is you can do this anywhere. Start by walking slowly. Feel each step. Imagine that your feet are talking to the ground.

Finally, remember that learning how to center yourself is different from actually feeling centered. Just as you can’t learn to swim by reading about it, you cannot experience the benefits of being centered until you practice the techniques.

Start of the Day

When you do something very valuable first thing in the morning you set the tone for the day.

I had a great coaching call with a client first thing in the morning today that set the tone for the day. By the time the day was finished, I had several valuable client interactions, good family interactions, excellent voluntary work, and effective staff meeting.

It all began with the first call in the morning. Choose what you do first in the morning carefully as it sets the rest of the day in motion.

Lazy Day

Once in a while you will find that you just cannot get going.

You try to work in different places but your body does not respond. You eat different types of food or drink coffee or eat some sugary stuff to get the energy to buckle down and start working, but you find the rejuvenation short-lived.

When this happens your body is telling you it is time to rest and have a lazy day. If this happens too often then there would be a cause for worry. However, if it is once a month it is fine. When you go full speed for many days your body will tell you it is time to refuel by resting a bit.

It boils down to balance. There is a time to work and a time to play and a time to pray. Just like we have seasons in the year similarly we have seasons in our life journey. Enjoy the ride no matter what.

Execution, not Excuses!

Did you start your New Year with a bang or a hangover?

Most party on New Year’s Eve then wake up late with a hangover. If you partied last night till early morning you are like most people and you are excused. But do not let the day pass without some serious revisit of your goals for 2019.

Even if you have articulated your goals for 2019 earlier, you need to revisit these goals daily to imprint in your mind, heart, body, and soul!

People say I know all this stuff. However, it is not what you know that counts; it is what you do! Doing requires reminders, focus, and accountability!

Make 2019 a year of execution, not excuses! Happy New Year!

Non Judgmental!

We all feel that we are non judgmental. The reality is it is very difficult to be non judgemental.

We all have our biases and prejudices. The only way to be aware of our biases is to catch ourselves in action. When you find someone taking long to order their food and we go in our mind ‘there he or she goes again’ or if you are in a line up and someone takes a little longer to conclude a purchase and we say, ‘how long does it take to conclude a simple transaction for God’s sake?’ These are examples of making judgemental remarks.

Not everyone can be like you. Just because people are different from you does not make them objects for judgement.

Acceptance of people the way they are, not the way you want them to be; is the foundation of non judgement. Not so easy!

Persistence

Most of us miss our best opportunities because they come disguised as hard work. Hard work is a fact of life. If you want to be successful, you have to work hard. Thomas Edison was on the money when he remarked, “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.”

But hard work doesn’t have to be drudgery.  It can be a source of great enjoyment. If you develop joy in your work, you’ll find that it produces positive energy.

To develop joy in your work, you must be doing something that you’re good at, is meaningful to you, and contributes to your family, your organization, and society.

For many people, hard work is a drain on energy and emotions. They’re tired and stressed out.  Find work that brings you joy.  When you find it, pursue it with persistence.
