Once you have formed a new habit do not go back to your old ways.

It will take much less effort to continue the new habit, however, if you slack off then going back to the old ways will also not take too much effort.
You have to imprint in your mind that the new habit is worth it. It will bring good health, productivity, success therefore worth continuing and sustaining. If your previous habit has been there for many years there will be an inclination to go back there which you have to find a way to resist until the new habit becomes an unconscious competence.
Creating certain rituals that help propel the new habit are worth exploring.
According to B.J.Fogg, a psychologist, and researcher at Stanford University to create a real lifelong habit, the focus should be on training your brain to succeed at small adjustments then gaining confidence from that success. To do that, one needs to design behavior changes that are both easy to do and can be seamlessly slipped into your existing routine. An example of a small adjustment could be wearing your running shoes the moment you wake up. Wearing your running shoes the moment you wake up is a small adjustment which could, however, trigger you to go for a walk.
